he Nurse Practitioner Association New York State (The NPA) was established in 1980 as a non-profit organization under the name The Nurse Practitioner Association, Inc. Since 1980, The NPA has grown financially, programmatically and increased the visibility and credibility of nurse practitioners within the healthcare community, at both the national and state levels of government, and with consumers throughout New York.

The mission of The Nurse Practitioner Association New York State is to promote and support the highest standards of healthcare throughout New York State; through education, advocacy, leadership and fostering the empowerment of nurse practitioner professional practice.

Vision

The vision of The Nurse Practitioner Association New York State is to ensure that all New Yorkers have access to nurse practitioners who are committed to providing culturally-competent, quality care as integral members of a diverse, collegial community; while enabled to practice at the highest level of their licensure, free of unnecessary barriers.

Tax Exempt Status

The New York State Coalition of Nurse Practitioners, Inc. (d/b/a) The Nurse Practitioner Association New York State (The NPA) is a New York not for profit corporation. The NPA has received tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service under section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code. Under the Internal Revenue Code, The NPA may endorse political candidates and advocate for positions on public policy issues that affect the nurse practitioner profession in New York. The NPA advises its members that 12% of their individual membership dues are spent on lobbying expenses and that this amount is not tax deductible as a business expense on the member's individual or business tax return.

Nurse practitioners (NPs) are advanced practice registered nurses and are integral to the U.S. health care system. Today, NPs are mainstream providers in all sectors of health including primary and specialty care. NPs diagnose, treat, and prescribe across a wide range of health conditions to all populations across the lifespan and take a true patient-centered approach to care. Focusing on health promotion, education, and counseling as well as disease prevention, NPs partner with their patients to make better health decisions. There are an estimated 270,000 NPs across the United States and New York has more NPs than any other state at approximately 20,000. NPs care for millions of patients annually and have a 50-year history, validated with numerous patient outcome studies, of providing high quality, personalized care resulting in high levels of patient satisfaction.
